§ 24-38. Nonconforming signs.

  • (a)

    All signs erected or maintained prior to January 1, 1979, which do not conform to the provisions of this chapter shall be allowed to continue except as hereinafter provided:

    (1)

    Nonconforming flashing, animated or portable signs in any zoning district or special district: one year.

    (2)

    Nonconforming signs made of paper, cloth or other nondurable material in any zoning district or special district: one year.

    (b)

    A nonconforming sign shall not be replaced by another nonconforming sign except that the substitution or interchange of poster panels, painted boards or demountable material on nonconforming signs shall be permitted.

    (c)

    Minor repairs and maintenance of nonconforming signs such as repainting, electrical repairs and neon tubing repairs shall be permitted.

    (d)

    Nonconforming signs which are structurally altered, relocated or replaced shall comply in all respects with the provisions of this chapter.

    (e)

    New signs related to legally established nonconforming uses may be erected, provided they comply with the sign regulations applicable to the use in the most restricted district in which the use is permitted.
