§ 4. Terms of officers; election of successors.

  • That at the municipal election to be held in May, 1967, there shall be elected a mayor and four (4) commissioners. The mayor so elected shall serve a term of two (2) years, and his successor shall be elected at the municipal election in 1969, and biennially thereafter. Two (2) commissioners shall at all times be elected from that portion of the town located West of the eastern boundary of that property known as the McRae Woods, extended due North to the town limits. The candidate from this portion of town who receives the highest number of votes shall be elected and shall serve a term of four (4) years, and his successor shall be elected at the municipal election in 1971, and quadrennially thereafter. The candidate receiving the next highest number of votes shall be elected commissioner and shall serve a term of two (2) years, and his successor shall be elected at the municipal election in 1969, and quadrennially thereafter. Two (2) commissioners shall at all times be elected from that portion of the town located East of the eastern boundary of that property known as the McRae Woods, extended due North to the town limits; and the candidate from this portion of town who receives the highest number of votes shall be elected and shall serve a term of four (4) years, and his successor shall be elected at the municipal election in 1971, and quadrennially thereafter; and the candidate receiving the next highest number of votes shall be elected and shall serve a term of two (2) years, and his successor shall be elected at the municipal election in 1969, and quadrennially thereafter. If a vacancy occurs in the office of mayor for any cause, the mayor pro tem shall automatically become mayor and be sworn into office. In case of a vacancy after election in the office of commissioner for any cause, the remaining members of the board of commissioners shall appoint a qualified voter of the town to fill the vacancy until the next municipal election, at which time a commissioner shall be elected to fill the unexpired term.
